What is Repeal Day?

Celebrating Repeal Day on public Kentucky bourbon tourRepeal Day celebrates the passage of the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1919, the 18th Amendment enabled a national prohibition banning the production, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages. Prohibition saw a loss of Tennessee whiskey craftsmanship and other alcohol distilling traditions. It was an era where rich traditions were locked away.

On Dec. 5, 1933, the 18th Amendment was ratified, making alcohol legal again. Tennessee was the 19th state to ratify the 21st Amendment. However, the 21st Amendment did not overturn any existing state laws regarding the manufacturing, sales, and consumption of alcohol. Tennessee, as a state, did not lift the ban on the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages until May 21, 1937.

There are a number of states, that back then and even now, deploy what they call “Blue Laws”. These “Blue Laws” are religious in orgin and seek to monitor the actions and behaviors of state residents to ensure standard, moral community behavior. An example of a Blue Law is the ban of retail sales of alcoholic beverages on Sundays. Tennessee is one of the states that enforces the Blue Law of no alcoholic sales on Sundays.

Learn more about the history of Tennessee whiskey craftsmanship on your next Mint Julep tour! Prohibition is a popular topic on many of our experiences, especially our Jack Daniel’s Distillery Tour and Hometown Experience. Be sure to ask your guide to tell you more.
