New Louisville Bourbon Tours
Kentucky Artisan Distillery
Meet at the Mint Julep Gift Shop in the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville (140 N. 4th St.) to start your morning tour to Kentucky Artisan Distillery. Available each Thursday at 9:15 a.m., this half-day outing travels from the Galt House east to the contract distillery known for several famous brands.
Kentucky Artisan Distillery is best known as the home of Jefferson’s Reserve bourbon. The craft contract distiller also produces Whiskey Row Bourbon, which is only available in Kentucky, and Highspire Rye Whiskey, which is aged in red wine barrels. Tours of the distillery include a walk through the still room and bottling line. You’ll learn about innovative distilling and aging processes, like Jefferson’s Ocean project where bourbon is aged at sea.
Your bourbon tour ends with a tasting of Kentucky Artisan products, which may include various expressions of Jefferson’s bourbon and other housemade whiskeys. You’ll then head back to Louisville returning to the Galt House by 12:15 p.m. to enjoy the rest of your day in the Derby City!
Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience at Stitzel-Weller Distillery
For an afternoon experience, hop on our Urban Adventure to Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience departing at 1:45 p.m. You’ll venture south of the city to the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery site for their whiskey experience. On your Bulleit tour, you’ll learn about the past, present and future of the family of whiskeys. Walk through a barrel house, Tom Bulleit’s office, a micro still-house and their cooper shop during your visit. This is also the current home of Orphan Barrel, Blade & Bow and I.W. Harper brands.
Stitzel-Weller Distillery first opened in the 1930s by Julian Van Winkle Sr. (known as Pappy Van Winkle) and partners. Between 1934 and 1972, popular brands like W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Pappy Van Winkle and Rebel Yell were produced there. The site was unused and closed to the public for many years until distilling resumed and tours started in 2014.
You’ll finish with a tasting of Bulleit portfolio bourbon and whiskeys. Then, head back with the tour bus group to the Galt House just in time for your evening in the Louisville. You’ll return by 4:15 p.m. with plenty of time to enjoy your stay.
