What is Repeal Day?

Celebrating Repeal Day on public Kentucky bourbon tourRepeal Day celebrates the passage of the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1919, the 18th Amendment enabled a national prohibition banning the production, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages. Some distilleries were able to produce bourbon, whiskey and other spirits during Prohibition for medicinal reasons. Prohibition not only led to a rise in civilian delinquency, but also the loss of the tradition and customs associated with distilling.

On Dec. 5, 1933, the 18th Amendment was ratified, making alcohol legal again. This year marks the 86th anniverary of Repeal Day and the end to prohibition. The day marks the return of a Kentucky distilling craftsmanship and all that goes along with consuming.

Learn more about the craftsmanship, history, and traditions that are part of Kentucky bourbon distilling on your next Mint Julep tour! Prohibition is a popular topic on many of our experiences and plays a key role in the history of Kentucky distilleries throughout the years. Be sure to ask your guide to tell you more and raise your glass to remember the time when one could not legally do so.
